Crooning is not so much a style of music as it is a technique in which to sing popular songs. Before the advent of the microphone, popular singers like Al Jolson had to project to the rear seats of a theatre, which made for a very loud vocal style. The microphone made possible the more personal style. One of the first crooners was English singer Al Bowlly who is invariably credited as one of the inventors of the crooning style. Many of the early crooners, such as Bing Crosby and early Frank Sinatra are still household names and the style is carried on by the likes of Harry Connick jnr and Michael Bublé. Female singers of popular songs are not called crooners but their style is the same, when the French term “Chanteuse” was applied to them early on in the USA. In how many books or films have we come across the New York reference to a “Chantoosie”? Early names were Lena Horne and Billie
Holliday, followed later by the likes of Nina Simone and Patti Page. In their latest show Classic Crooners Dean Doyle and Sophistication bring you the most memorable of the crooners and their songs. Dean has a long history with this music. “This is the music I heard with my parents when I was growing up and my mother had the sheet music to all of the popular
songs. The singers, male and female were the best but so were the songs: strong melodies and meaningful lyrics ultimately stand the test of time.” Artists featured include Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, Matt Monroe, Dean Martin, Andy Williams, Tony Bennett, Michael Buble and Harry Connick Jnr. Piano solos and instrumental hits of the 40s and 50s including Roger Munsie’s classic rendition of Acker Bilk’s ‘Strangers on the Shore’.
